Flower Mound's History

Flower Mound gets its name from a large 12.5-acre mound located in the southern part of town. Perhaps the draw of this unique structure brought the first settlers in, but the first people to settle in the region used it for summer camps in the 1840s, and then decided to settle permanently in the 1850s. In spite of its early history, Flower Mound did not incorporate until 1961.

After incorporating, Flower Mound grew quickly. In 1974 the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was built just four miles to the south of the community. This led to a period of unprecedented growth when the population nearly quadrupled in size. During the 1990s, it grew by around 13% every year. Today, it continues to grow as more people are draw to the suburban lifestyle and convenient transportation options.
